KUALA LUMPUR, May 7 — Nur Fitri Azmeer Nordin, who was convicted of child pornography possession in the UK, will be arrested if he repeats his offence here, Deputy Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Datuk Seri Noor Rashid Ibrahim said today.
“If he comes back here and does the same thing which got him into trouble there in the UK, we would take action on him according to the law,” Noor Rashid said at a press conference today.
“What was done by the kid (Nur Fitri) was against the UK Acts and that is what got him in trouble. He was taken appropriate action (sic) according to their laws. After serving his time, he is a free man,” the top police official added.
Noor Rashid said despite Malaysia not having an official sex offenders registry, they will keep track of criminals as their offences are registered.
“We don’t have a sex offender’s list but crimes like this we have a record because it is considered registered crimes.
“We have a list of registered offenders but it cannot be shared with the public,” he added.
He also said the sex offenders list was not necessary yet as pedophila here is not as bad as the UK, as there was less than 10 cases here.
“Our country does not have many pedophiles like in developed countries. If there are more cases like this (Nur Fitri) we might change things,” he said.
According to the British media last week, Nur Fitri, who was studying on a Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA) scholarship at Imperial College London, one of the world’s top universities, was found to be in possession of over 30,000 videos and photographs of child pornography.
Police who raided his home in London found the youth sitting beside a life-sized mannequin of a young boy.
He reportedly possessed 601 “Category A” videos and images, which depicted abuse involving penetrative sexual acts with children.
The Southwark Crown Court that charged him yesterday said that he is serving a 18 months sentence contradicting claims made by MARA that his sentencing has been reduced.
