ROMPIN, May 5 — A total of 38 polling centres with 115 channels for the Rompin parliamentary by-election opened from 8am today to enable 52,744 voters to cast their ballots.
Yesterday the ballot boxes were sent to Pulau Tioman by helicopter.
Pahang EC Office director Shafie Taib yesterday said the polling centre would be closed by stages at 2pm and 3pm because there were not many voters.
Meanwhile the polling centre at Bukit Ridan, Muadzam Shah which has 312 voters will be closed at 4pm and other polling centres at 5pm.
On Thursday, 464 individuals or 85.1 per cent out of the 545 voters had cast their ballots in early voting at four polling centres in the parliamentary constituency.
The counting of votes began as soon as the centres closed and the tallying will be conducted at the Dewan Jubli Perak Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah here.
EC chairman Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof said EC expected that the voter turnout percentage would exceed 80 per cent compared to 86 per cent in the last 13th general election.
He also expected that the results of the Rompin by-election could be announced by as early as 11pm, taking into consideration that the constituency was vast at 5,390.2 sq km comprising three state seats, namely Bukit Ibam, Muadzam Shah and Tioman.
Today is a public holiday in Pahang and it is anticipated that more voters will turn up to cast their ballots.
The Rompin by-election witnesses a straight fight between Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate Datuk Hasan Arifin and PAS candidate Nazri Ahmad to fill the vacancy following the death of its incumbent Tan Sri Dr Jamaluddin Jarjis.
Jamaluddin, who was also Perumahan Rakyat 1Malaysia (PR1MA) chairman died in a helicopter crash in Semenyih, Selangor on April 4.
In the 13th general election, Jamaluddin retained the seat which he had held for almost six terms by defeating former PAS Muslimat chief Nuridah Mohd Salleh with a 15,114 majority-vote. — Bernama
