KUALA LUMPUR, April 29 — A debate on moderation scheduled for tonight was cancelled just two hours before it was supposed to begin, the British High Commission revealed today.

The debate, organised by the High Commission in Malaysia and the University of Nottingham, was cancelled by the host International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) for unknown reasons.

“We deeply regret that the ‘Everything in Moderation’ debate due to take place this evening has been cancelled.

“We have been informed today by the International Islamic University Malaysia that they are unable to host the event as initially planned.

“We apologise for the inconvenience caused following this last-minute cancellation.

“Please refer any queries or media enquiries to IIUM. Thank you,” the British High Commission in Kuala Lumpur wrote in a Facebook post with a poster of the debate.

“The Great Debate Series 2 — Everything in Moderation: Ways of Living Together” was to feature Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Paul Low, PKR’s Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, lawyer Firdaus Husni, Emeritus Professor Datuk Dr Shad Saleem, Niki Cheong and Professor Dr Ahmad Yousif as panel speakers.

BFM radio’s presenter, Ahmad Fuad Rahmat, was supposed to be the moderator.

British High Commissioner Vicki Treadell was also supposed to give an introduction speech.

Calls made to the university’s corporate communication office after 5pm, when the cancellation was made known, went unanswered.
