GEORGE TOWN, April 24 ― Penang launched today its own dance group ― Euphoria Penang ― to develop the art of modern cultural and contemporary dance in the state.

The group, mooted and led by internationally-renowned dancer Aida Redza, was set up to promote and develop new creative dance in Penang.

“We hope to provide a platform for young dancers and develop local talents of all ages through this group,” Aida said.

She said the group will also be presenting a new and creative approach to local traditional and cultural dances.

Aida had set up the group with about 15 dancers mid-2014 and the troupe has since  performed at various events, including the Penang Chief Minister's Chinese New Year Open House 2015, Chap Goh Meh 2015, The World Curry Festival, Penang World Music Festival and Pesta Tanglung 2014.

“We hope to train more young talents in Penang to spur the dance industry here,” Aida said.

Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng, who officially launched the group today, said developing of the arts is important to spur the growth of the state’s creative industry.

“We need to support such a group which is important for the state's cultural development,” he said.
