SEBERANG PERAI, April 17 ― The Seberang Perai Municipal Council (MPSP) has been listed in the Malaysia Book of Records as the first local council to receive five quality management system certification.

MPSP president Datuk Mainunah Mohd Sharif, when announcing this at a press conference, said the local council was listed on April 13.

The council is the first local government to receive the five ISO certification, namely for quality management system ISO 9001: 2008 (QMS), environmental management system ISO 14001:2004 (EMS), occupational safety and health management system OHSAS 18001:2007, energy management system ISO 50001:2011 (EnMS) and quality environment management system 5S (QEMS).

Maimunah said the MPSP’s management systems that were based on quality standards were in line with its vision of achieving an international and intelligent city objective.

“On top of the listing on the Malaysia Book of Records, MPSP has also signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the city of Seoul, Korea for environmental policy and technology exchanges on April 9,” she said.

She said the agreement will see both cities share expertise and experiences in waste management and waste-to-energy policies.

Maimunah was in Korea to represent Southeast Asia by attending the Local Governments for Sustainability (ICLEI) World Congress 2015 between April 8 and 12, where she signed the MOU.

Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng, who was present at the press conference, congratulated MPSP for the Malaysia Book of Records listing.

He added that it is an honour for the MPSP to sign a MoU with a major city such as Seoul.
