ALOR SETAR, April 12 — Kedah police have asked the public not to easily believe the false information spread on the social media, without clarifying it first with the police.

Kedah police chief Datuk Zamri Yahya said criminal and local security cases which had gone viral on the social media could cause the public to worry.

He said the case where a girl in Sungai Patani was hurt in the face after she was hit by a knife recently when her parents quarrelled was not true.

“The incident happened in Thailand and went viral as having occurred in Sungai Petani. It causes confusion, restlessness and anger among the public.

“The people must check first the authenticity of the news with the police and the local print and electronic media which report actual news,” he said at the Royal Malaysian Police dinner with the media at the Kedah contingent police headquarters here last night.

At the event, 32 media practitioners in the state were awarded commendation letters by the Kedah police chief for their cooperation in crime prevention and community safety activities.  — Bernama
