KUALA LUMPUR, April 7 — A man was killed in a shootout with police after a high-speed car chase in Gombak here today.
Gombak district police chief ACP Ali Ahmad said a police team from the Selangor Criminal Investigation Department had followed the man, who was driving a white Proton Saga, and was behaving suspiciously at Jalan Sungai Tua, Gombak, at 1.20am.
Ali said when the police team approached the car the driver sped off.
He said the driver refused to stop his vehicle despite the police giving chase with sirens blaring.
“Upon reaching a road heading to Ulu Yam, the man lost control of his car and hit a road divider. The suspect alighted and fired several shots at the police. One of the policemen was hit but luckily the bullet lodged in his bulletproof vest.
“Fearing for their safety, another police officer fired several shots at the suspect who then collapsed,” he told Bernama.
Ali said upon checking the suspect, the team found him unconscious with a Smith & Wesson .22 clutched in his right palm.
“Initial investigations about the suspect, aged 30, revealed he had previous criminal records for drug-abuse cases and was from Johor,” he said, adding that the Proton Saga was reported stolen in Kepong.
The suspect was then sent to the Selayang Hospital but later succumbed to his injuries. — Bernama
