SHAH ALAM, April 1 — Unscheduled water disruption is affecting consumers in Petaling, Hulu Langat, Kuala Langat and Sepang.

Selangor Mentri Besar Azmin Ali said the water disruption occurred due to the temporary closure of the Sungai Semenyih water treatment plant since 9am today.

“The plant operated by consortium company, Abass Sdn Bhd is forced to temporarily close down due to ammonia and manganese contents in the Sungai Semenyih that exceed the level approved,” he told reporters at the lobby of the Selangor state legislative assembly here today.

He said investigations revealed the pollution was due to an aluminium factory located at Semenyih and orders had been issued that it ceased operations immediately.

According to him, this was the fifth time the operation of the water  treatment palnt was closed by Abass within a period of two months after Sungai Semenyih faced similar pollution on February 15, March 3, March 7 and March 19.

“Currently, the Selangor Water Management Authority (Luas) and Abass are monitoring the condition of the river and the resumption of operation will depend on the pollution level,” he said. — Bernama
