Woman jailed for attempt to support, marry IS militant

KUALA LUMPUR, March 31 — A woman was sentenced to two years' jail by the High Court here today after she pleaded guilty to a charge of attempting to give support to a member of the so-called IS militant group by marrying him.

Judge Kamardin Hashim handed down the sentence on Ummi Khalsom Bahak, 26, who changed her plea to guilty to an alternative charge when the case came up for mention today.

She was ordered to serve the sentence from the date of her arrest on Oct 5 last year.

The woman was then taken to the Kajang Prison.

It is learnt that Ummi Khalsom, formerly an assistant credit officer, is the first local woman to be sentenced to prison for an offence involving the IS.

On Oct 31 last year, she was charged in the Sepang Sessions Court with attempting to give support to the IS by taking an AirAsia flight from KLIA2, Sepang, to Brunei and Istanbul, Turkey, to marry IS member Muhammad Aqif Huesen Rahizat.

The offence was allegedly committed at the Immigration counter of the International Departure Hall, klia2, at 5.20 am on Oct 5, 2014.

During mitigation, lawyer Datuk Hanif Hassan, who represented Ummi Khalsom, said his client was still young, not married and the third of seven siblings.

Earlier, deputy public prosecutor Afzainizam Abdul Aziz, who prosecuted, asked the court to take into account the seriousness of the offence and to impose a heavy sentence as a lesson to the accused and also others.

According to the facts of the case, Ummi Khalsom had befriended Muhammad Aqif Huesen through Facebook.  — Bernama
