SHAH ALAM, March 28 — PAS is working with political foe Umno only on the controversial hudud issue and no other, the Islamist party’s vice-president Datuk Husam Musa has said in the face of widening cracks within the Pakatan Rakyat (PR) opposition pact it is in.
In defending his party’s cooperation with the Barisan Nasional (BN) anchor party for the enforcement of the strict Islamic criminal law that prescribes amputation of limbs for theft among others, the Kelantan leader pointed out that PAS will not work with Umno on any “other governance issues”.
“This is public offence, you are betraying the public. So we cannot forget this issue just because you want to support us on Act 355,” he told reporters last night after a public talk on Malaysia’s economic future here, referring to current controversy surrounding the debt-laden 1 Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB).
“You can support us on Act 355 or you can initiate the enactment of Act 355. We can work on 355 but we cannot work on other governance issues right now,” he added.
Husam also advised Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak to state his party’s official stand on hudud soon, saying the latter was opening himself up to speculation of a political agenda to “bait PAS along with BN” the longer he kept silent.
“I’d advise him to make a clear stand soonest,” Husam said.
On March 19, PAS-ruled Kelantan passed key amendments to its Shariah Criminal Code II 1993 with the support of several Umno lawmakers in a move to enable the eventual implementation of hudud in the Malay-majority east coast state.
The move drew fire from PAS’ PR ally, DAP, as well as BN’s non-Malay component parties, including MCA and Gerakan.
