KUALA LUMPUR, March 24 — Deputy Home Minister Datuk Seri Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar today defended Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar’s Twitter policing as part of the Inspector-General of Police’s duties.

He also said Khalid was not only monitoring Twitter, and that the latter has other duties to attend to.

“If the IGP is not doing his job, you know what will happen to the country?” he said.

“He is not one-sided... he is only on the side of the law and is investigating cases and passing it to the Attorney-General,” Wan Junaidi said when asked about Khalid’s alleged selective investigation mannerisms.

The deputy minister added that despite technological changes, offences from the previous decades remain liable for investigations.

“Officers are trained to believe (that) what is an offence in 1990’s is still an offence in 2015. 

“So, the IGP is just trained to do his job,” he told reporters when met in the Parliament.

An active user of Twitter, Khalid also regularly uses the social network to order the police to investigate individuals or groups.

But his public directives has drawn allegations of selective action targeting government critics such as activists and opposition lawmakers.

“I will act as the referee to say that this is not right and will act,” he said during a March 20 press conference, adding that his Twitter directives were also means of swift and “fast” action.

Khalid also claimed that the high-profile enforcement led to declines in instances of sedition online.

An anti-Sedition Act group yesterday launched a campaign for Twitter to ban Khalid allegedly for online abuse.
