ALOR SETAR, March 23 — A 10-year-old Indonesian girl was among 11 illegal immigrants detained by the Kedah Immigration Department when they were found working at two restaurants here yesterday.
The foreigners, comprising two Vietnamese, two Nepalese and six Indonesians were nabbed under ongoing operation, ‘Ops Selera’ to weed out illegal immigrants.
Department director Mohamad Yusri Hashim said in the first raid at a restaurant in Tandok, a team of enforcement officers nabbed the Vietnamese, Nepalese and an Indonesian about 8.40pm.
In a statement here today, he said a 54-year-old local man, believed to be the employer, was also arrested.
He said the man would be investigated under Section 56 (1)(d) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 for sheltering illegal immigrants. Mohamad Yusri said about eight hours earlier, enforcement personnel raided another restaurant in Seberang Jalan Putera and picked up six female Indonesians aged between 10 and 40.
A local man was also picked up to facilitate investigations.
The 11 foreigners are temporarily detained at the state immigration lock-up here before deportation. — Bernama
