KUALA LUMPUR, March 21 ― Lim Kit Siang asked today if Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar suffers from “selective attention”, noting the national police chief has remained silent on Twitter despite numerous reports on the death and rape threats allegedly received by a radio presenter who criticised hudud.

The DAP adviser pointed out that the media-savvy Inspector-General of Police (IGP) would typically swing into “Twitter action” very quickly when the matter involved investigations against Pakatan Rakyat (PR) lawmakers and activists.

“But why is he keeping his silence for 24 hours over the death and rape threats to Aisyah Tajuddin?” Lim asked in a statement here.

“Is the IGP suffering from selective attention in the way the police authorities suffer from the sin of  selective investigation and harassment of PR leaders and NGO activists (the latest victim being the 11th #Kita Lawan rally arrest of PKR vice-president and MP for Batu, Chua Tian Chang) and the Attorney-General suffer from the disease of selective prosecutions?” he asked again.

The veteran lawmaker said IGP Khalid could not plead ignorance in Aisyah's case, as the so-called death and rape threats against the radio presenter has been on social media for the past 36 hours.

He said the national police chief was duty-bound to at least explain the action his officers have taken so far to protect the girl.

“In view of Khalid’s 'fame' for his twitter-quick monitoring of events concerning PR leaders and NGO activists, Malaysians wonder and have a right to know what the IGP has done with regard to the death and rape threats on the social media against Aisyah Tajuddin,” he added.

Aisyah received the threats on various online platforms after a video titled “Hudud Isi Periuk Nasi? [Kupas]” (Does hudud fill our rice bowls?) was uploaded on the business radio station’s website and YouTube channel on Thursday.

In it, she points out that even as Kelantan is attempting to implement hudud, the east coast state is facing other problems like its homeless flood victims, as well as increasing drug and divorce cases.

Users also urged authorities to take action against Aisyah, accusing her of insulting Islam.

BFM later removed the video and apologised for any offence caused.

Yesterday, Aisyah's father Professor Dr Mohamad Tajuddin Mohamad Rasdi penned a letter published by The Malaysian Insider asking if Malaysia was no longer a safe place to live in if simply expressing opposing views attracted such dangers as rape and even death.

As the country's top cop, Lim said Khalid would be the most appropriate person to answer Tajuddin's question.

Kelantan, administered by Islamist party PAS, passed amendments to the Shariah Criminal Code II 1993 on Thursday in a bid to enforce hudud law in the state ― despite fierce opposition from its PR allies, the DAP and PKR.

PAS is expected to table private members’ bills in Parliament to remove legal roadblocks in the implementation of the Islamic penal code that punishes apostasy with the death penalty and theft with amputation of limbs.
