GEORGE TOWN, March 20 — Three academics today sought for the police to investigate the multiple death and rape threats directed at BFM radio presenter Aisyah Tajuddin over a video on hudud.

Datuk Dr Toh Kin Woon, Dr Wong Chin Huat and Dr Lim Chee Han lodged the reports at the Northeast district police headquarters here, expressing concern over the nature of the threats and intimidation.

“Several people used Facebook and YouTube threatening to burn her, to rape her and to shoot her and this is criminally intimidating her,” Dr Toh, who is also the Bersih 2.0 Penang chairman, said.

He said it is an unhealthy development that more people are becoming intolerant of dissent to the point of using violence to stifle opposing views.

“We can disagree with others but we should not be resorting to violence,” he said.

The threats were posted in Facebook and YouTube after BFM uploaded the video titled “Hudud Isi Periuk Nasi? [Kupas] (Does hudud fill our rice bowls?)” on its website and YouTube channel yesterday.

The video is of Aisyah pointing out that even as Kelantan is passing the hudud law, the east coast state is facing other problems like its homeless flood victims, as well as increasing drug and divorce cases.

The video, seen as questioning hudud, went viral but the official version was pulled off the business radio’s website and YouTube following the threats.

PAS tabled and passed amendments to the Shariah Criminal Code II 1993 yesterday in Kelantan in its bid to enforce hudud law in the state ― despite fierce opposition from its Pakatan Rakyat (PR) allies, DAP and PKR.

PAS is expected to table private members’ bills in Parliament in May to enable it to implement the Islamic penal code that punishes apostasy with death and theft with the amputation of limbs.
