KUALA LUMPUR, MARCH 19 — A group of Indian supporters of jailed Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim will hold a hunger strike to protest his incarceration outside Sungai Buloh Prison this weekend.

The group called Kita Bangkit Kita Lawan (KBKL) plans to assemble under a canopy outside the prison at 8am on Saturday and forego food and drink until midnight on Sunday.

When announcing their plans at a press conference here today, the group said it hoped for up to one hundred people to join them in what they say will be a silent protest.

A spokesman for the group, Chandran Ramasamy, who is also a member of PKR, said they chose to protest with a silent hunger strike because they were afraid of being arrested for sedition if they actually spoke.

“Whatever you do they (the government) will come for you,” he said. “But it is a citizen’s right to be quiet and not eat.”

“We don’t know how else to express our feelings on the jailing of Anwar,” K. Gunasekaran, another spokesman for the group and also a member of PKR, said. “This is one of the few things we feel we can do.”

Chandran said this would not be “a hunger strike till you die,” because it would only be for two days.

KBKL said they had three requests: for the Agong to convene a pardons board hearing to discuss Anwar’s application for a royal pardon; for the Home Ministry, Prisons Authority, and Attorney-General to allow Anwar to attend Parliament; and for Anwar to be moved to Sungai Buloh hospital for medical treatment.

Gunasekaran said they would submit a memorandum to the Agong asking him to convene the pardons board after the hunger strike.

He said that if their protest was successful, they would consider staging it in other parts of the country like Kedah and Johor.

On February 10, the Federal Court upheld the Court of Appeal’s 2014 ruling that reversed Anwar’s acquittal of sodomising former aide Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan, and sentenced the Permatang Pauh lawmaker to five years’ jail.
