KUALA LUMPUR, March 9 — A high-powered team comprising officials from the Attorney-General’s Chambers and the police has been set up to investigate all complaints on debt-laden state investment firm 1 Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB), Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said today.

The country’s top policeman promised that all police reports filed would be scrutinised.

“We have a member of task force set up by AG involving the PDRM, we are investigating on those reports lodged,” the inspector-general of police told reporters at the police academy in Cheras.

He added the investigations were under Sections 420 and 409 of the Penal Code for cheating and criminal breach of trust.

When asked if the police would also investigate the reports filed against Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, Khalid replied with a brief, “Yes”.

Khalid said the investigation was still in the early stage at the moment and progress was slow.

Najib had come under fire from federal opposition lawmakers who alleged the prime minister had a personal involvement in 1MDB, with DAP MP Tony Pua blaming him for creating the “biggest scandal ever in Malaysian history”.

The prime minister has since filed a defamation suit against Pua.

1MDB came under criticism after a British paper, The Sunday Times in collaboration with whistleblower site Sarawak Report, ran an exposé on March 1 on Malaysian business magnate Low Taek Jho and his alleged links to 1MDB’s venture with oil exploration and production firm PetroSaudi International.

In the exposé, Sarawak Report accused the Malaysian tycoon popularly known as Jho Low, of siphoning off US$700 million (RM2.5 billion) from 1MDB and using PetroSaudi as a “front” in a 2009 joint-venture.

Petrosaudi has since denied the allegations.
