KUALA LUMPUR, March 3 — Eleven police personnel were nabbed in a crackdown on suspected bribery and fuel smuggling at the Malaysia-Thai border, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) said today.

The MACC said that this increases its haul under the “Ops Licin 2” crackdown to 26 individuals, which also includes anti-smuggling officers.

“Ops Licin 2 was carried out since last night by MACC to track enforcement officers that were involved in soliciting and receiving bribes, believed to be for protection of smuggling activities and illegal selling of petrol and diesel at the Malaysia-Thailand border,” the anti-corruption agency said today.

Out of today’s 11-man haul as of 7pm, MACC said that nine were nabbed in Kedah, while two police personnel attached to the police force’s General Operations Force (PGA) was nabbed in Perak to aid in investigations under Ops Licin 2.

Six of the Kedah officers nabbed were police corporals, while the remaining three held the ranks of constable, sergeant and sergeant-major respectively.

MACC said the 15 nabbed yesterday included 13 officers from the Home Ministry’s Anti-Smuggling Unit (UPP) and the PGA, while the remaining two are a former UPP officer and a civilian respectively.

All 15 nabbed yesterday were released today after MACC recorded their statements.

The former UPP officer in Kedah was released on a RM10,000 bail with a guarantor, while the civilian in Perak was released on a RM2,500 bail with one guarantor.

Seven officers in Kedah and six PGA officers in Perak were all released on police bail, MACC said.

MACC said the enforcement officers will be probed under Section 17(a) of the MACC Act 2009, while the civilian will be probed under Section 16(a)(B) of the same law.
