KUALA LUMPUR, March 1 — The Edge Media Group said today it will continue to publish articles on Low Taek Jho and his alleged links to the controversies surrounding 1 Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB), despite facing possible legal action by the Malaysian billionaire.
In a brief statement that ran in its business weekly The Edge, group CEO and publisher Ho Kay Tat said the group has received several letters from Low’s lawyers accusing the group of allegedly defaming Low.
“We would like to state here that The Edge Media Group stands by all the articles we have published about Mr Low and about 1Malaysia Development Bhd, and we will continue to publish news stories about Mr Low and 1MDB as and when it is merited,” Ho said.
The statement also attached the first page of the latest legal notice the group received dated February 26, demanding a retraction of an allegedly false and defamatory assertion published by the group’s news portal The Malaysian Insider (TMI).
On February 23, TMI an an article titled “Razak family concerned about inheritance talk, say siblings”, following an exposé in The New York Times that highlighted Low’s wealth and role as a property investor.
Low’s lawyers have threatened to commence legal action if the group do not retract the articles they published and refrain from writing similar articles in the future.
Earlier today, TMI ran a story quoting news portal Sarawak Report, accusing Low of siphoning off US$700 million (RM2.5 billion) from 1MDB.
Last month, the flamboyant businessman also known as “Jho Low” denied any links to the blogger “ahrily90”, who has been accused of being responsible for the online attacks against The Edge owner Datuk Tong Kooi Ong, CIMB chairman Datuk Seri Nazir Razak and former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
The allegations against Low were contained in a February 3 article by The Edge weekly's article titled “EXPOSED! Pro-Jho Low blogger behind attacks on Dr M, Nazir and Edge owner Tong” that was also published on TMI.
Subsequently, Tong's lawyers served a notice on Low, demanding that the magnate stop fabricating lies against himself, The Edge and TMI in the blogs malaysianexpose.wordpress.com and kronismemahathir.wordpress.com
