KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 26 — The German embassy’s representative here will visit Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to gauge his condition and ensure he is receiving humane treatment in prison, his second daughter Nurul Nuha Anwar said.

According to Nurul Nuha, the visit was a result of her family’s “March to Freedom” initiative to free Anwar, in which they are intensifying efforts to contact foreign embassies here and update them on the federal opposition leader’s condition in prison.

“The German embassy is going to Sungai Buloh Prison soon to check on his condition,” she told Malay Mail Online in an interview.

“As part of the March to Freedom campaign, we have been meeting ambassadors, engaging with human rights activists.

“It is quite fortunate that most embassies are very concerned. World leaders have expressed their disappointment,” Nurul Nuha added.

She said there have been concerns raised regarding Anwar’s treatment in prison, as the PKR de facto leader had told his lawyers he was being treated like a “common prisoner” rather than a prisoner of conscience as he is claiming to be.

Both Home Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and his deputy, Datuk Seri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, previously said Anwar will receive no special dispensation during his time in prison.

“According to the lawyers, the prison guards are making him take part in morning marches, he is being made to sing the national anthem and also sing ‘selamat pagi cikgu’ (good morning, teacher) as part of a routine salute to the guards,” Nurul Nuha said.

On February 10, the Federal Court upheld the Court of Appeal’s 2014 ruling that reversed Anwar’s acquittal of sodomising former aide Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan, and sentenced the Permatang Pauh lawmaker to five years’ jail.
