PETALING JAYA, Feb 24 — PKR will embark on a week-long nationwide campaign to rally support for jailed leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in a bid sustain its offensive against the Barisan Nasional (BN) government, party leaders said today.

Information chief Syed Ibrahim Syed Noh said the programme was necessary to show voters that the campaign for good governance by PKR and its Pakatan Rakyat allies would not be impeded by Anwar’s incarceration.

“KeAdilan will remain committed to continue the people’s struggle by announcing a nationwide roadshow programme called #BebasAnwar (Free Anwar) in at least 60 locations,” Syed Ibrahim told reporters at the party’s main office here.

“The objective is to give the people a chance to hear our explanation on current issues, which of course include the Fitnah II case (Sodomy II), and the jailing of Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim as well as other scandals of the Umno-BN government,” he added.

Syed Ibrahim said the programme will be the first wave of PKR’s offensive against the government following Anwar’s conviction for what the party has insisted were trumped up charges on sodomy.

It will start on March 1 and will end on March 7 with a rally to be held in the city centre.

“There will be a second wave but we will announce it later,” the PKR information chief explained.

Syed Ibrahim said the campaign is also aimed at showing the public that the fight for justice is not just about Anwar.

He said the programme is a continuation of the opposition’s previous efforts to highlight corruption and power abuses by government leaders.

“The people themselves realise that this is more than just about the personal affairs of Anwar Ibrahim but a resilient and courageous struggle for justice, truth and freedom for the people, politics with principles and a mature democracy,” he said.

The PKR leader expressed hope that the campaign would draw people out to join.

“They can keep the momentum up,” he said.

Anwar was sentenced to five years jail by the Federal Court on February 10 after a five-man panel led by Chief Justice Tun Arifin Zakaria upheld the Court of Appeal’s reversal of the opposition leader’s acquittal in 2012.

The 67-year-old veteran politician has, however, maintained his innocence, and continues to insist that the sodomy charge and guilty verdict were engineered by his foes in the government to kill his political career.
