Hudud resistance is futile, Kelantan PAS tells DAP

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 21 — No amount of objection from DAP will dissuade PAS from attempting to enforce hudud in Kelantan, state Deputy Mentri Besar Datuk Mohd Amar Abdullah said.

Already adamant on implementing the Islamic penal law previously, Mohd Amar said the death of PAS spiritual leader Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat has provided fresh impetus to the Islamist party’s ambition.

“It’s DAP’s right to object to our plan, but it will not have any bearing on our resolve to implement hudud in Kelantan,” he was quoted as saying by local daily The Star today.

“This is in accordance with the wish of the late Tok Guru Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat and we will soldier on to see the law is implemented here.”

The Kelantan leader’s remarks were in response to DAP parliamentary leader Lim Kit Siang’s call for PAS to reaffirm its commitment to Pakatan Rakyat’s common policy framework, which does not include hudud.

Lim pointed out on Tuesday that PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang said in 2012 that hudud could only be implemented if there were adequate conditions, such as having a minimum wage and a resolution of the unemployment problem.

PAS is expected to table two private members’ bills in Parliament next month, which are aimed at removing constitutional obstacles currently preventing it from enforcing hudud laws that it enacted in Kelantan as far back as 1993.

Nik Aziz died last Thursday at the age of 84 after battling prostate cancer. He once said in 2013 that he would not allow efforts to foster unity between PAS and Umno for as long as he lived.

Hudud law has been one of the most contentious issues within the Pakatan coalition from its formation in 2008, with PAS calling for its implementation, DAP vehemently opposing it, and PKR seemingly ambivalent to it.
