SHAH ALAM, Feb 20 — Schools in Selangor have been urged to to monitor the activities of students to ensure they are not influenced by negative elements, especially the Islamic State (IS) militant group.

Selangor Education director Zainuren Mohd Nor said his department always cooperate with the authorities to prevent the spread of extremist elements among school students.

“To date, no students in Selangor are reported to be involved in any militant group. I hope schools in the state will ensure that students are not influenced by any extremist group,” he said when contacted by Bernama, today.

He was commenting on a female student who was arrested by the police last Tuesday, for allegedly trying to join the IS militant group in Syria.

The 14 year-old student from Muar, Johor, was influenced to join IS after communicating via Facebook with two individuals who persuaded her to join them.

Zainuren said all schools should take proactive measures and stop any attempts by the IS to persuade students to join them via Facebook. — Bernama
