KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 19 — PKR MP Rafizi Ramli urged Malaysians today to lodge police reports on Sirul Azhar Umar’s claim he had killed Altantuya Shaariibuu under orders, saying this might help kickstart fresh investigations into the murder scandal.
The PKR secretary-general said this could prove an effective method to pressure the police into acceding to the request for another probe, especially with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak rubbishing Sirul’s claim earlier today.
“Then, I think Najib has nothing to worry about,” Rafizi told Malay Mail Online when asked to comment on the prime minister’s response.
“The public have to continue pursuing and make sure Sirul eventually reveals who is behind the killing and this can be done in many ways.
“One way is to lodge police reports to compel the police to reopen the investigation in light of what Sirul has indicated,” he said.
Apart from plans to lodge his own report next Monday, Rafizi said he will also provide the public with a template to file similar reports at any police station.
“I will be lodging a police report on Monday and we should encourage as many Malaysians to do so to demand the investigations be reopened,” he said.
Asked at MCA’s open house this morning to respond to Sirul’s claim that he had acted under orders when he killed Atantuya in 2006, Najib said “utter rubbish” before leaving the premise without commenting further.
“Najib can rubbish it… it is nothing for him to worry about, he can sleep well. This is a case of public interest so the police should not give excuses as to not wanting to open up investigations,” Rafizi added.
This morning, Rafizi’s Pakatan Rakyat colleague Lim Lip Eng lodged a police report at the Dang Wangi district police headquarters, saying that Sirul’s remarks should be taken seriously as it ultimately means that the actual mastermind behind the Mongolian model’s brutal murder is still at large.
When contacted, Ram Karpal Singh, who is one of the lawyers representing the late model’s kin, said Sirul’s statement is a serious remark that cannot be swept under the carpet.
“You cannot simply rubbish such a serious statement blatantly without an investigation, it is not possible to do so. At his stage it is the police’s duty to carry out investigation,” he said when contacted.
Sirul told news portal Malaysiakini two days ago that he acted under orders to murder Altantuya and is considering revealing why he and his accomplice, former chief Inspector Azilah Hadri shot dead the Mongolian model and blew her body up with explosives.
He said that the key people with the actual motive behind the murder that rocked the country is still free.
“I was under orders. The important people with motive (to murder Altantuya) are still free. It is not like I do not love the police or the country, but I acted under orders,” Sirul was quoted as saying.
Sirul who is currently detained in an immigration detention centre in Sydney, Australia was quoted saying that several Australian media organisations have also requested for an interview with him, but he has yet to decide on whether to do it.
“Yes, I am seriously considering the possibility,” Sirul was reported saying, when asked if he was prepared to reveal everything should he agree to an interview.
Sirul who has been sentenced to death for the murder, told Malaysiakini that he did not know Altantuya or her ex-lover Abdul Razak Baginda, who was acquitted of abetting her 2006 killing.
Sirul and Azilah were charged with the murder of 28-year-old Altantuya in 2006 and convicted in 2009.
They were freed after the appellate court acquitted them in 2013, but the Federal Court reversed the acquittal last month and sent them back to hang, marking the end to the eight-year saga.
Sirul was a no-show during the Federal Court hearing and it was later revealed that he is in Australia.
