KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 18 — Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu denied saying there were state police chiefs being investigated by the Malaysia Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), as was reported by an English daily today.

“What I said to reporters yesterday was that all senior police officers, including myself, can be investigated by MACC, and I never confirmed of some police chiefs being investigated by MACC for corruption,” he added.

He believed the reporter concerned had misunderstood what he said.

“I hope they correct the news,” he told a media conference on the “Balik Kampung Ops Selamat 6/2015” campaign held in conjunction with the Chinese New Year celebration at the Jalan Duta toll plaza here.

Khalid said if any of the state police chiefs were involved in corruption, he, himself, would take action against them.

“As it is, until today, there is no case of corruption involving state police chief,” he added.

In the meantime, Khalid said two students from institutes of higher learning who were arrested yesterday for uploading posters of a provocative nature protesting against the country’s court system on the social media, were remanded for four days, beginning today. 

The poster was associated with a protest against the country’s judicial system.

“The students, in their 20s, were picked up in Kuala Lumpur and will be investigated under the Sedition Act 1948,” said Khalid. 

He said the investigation so far, indicated that they had nothing to do with a video clip on YouTube, seen as an attempt to incite people to protest against the country’s judicial system.    

“Our country has laws... this is no playing matter, people who try to organise rallies and processions or anything that may violate the law, will have to face the consequences... we will not be silent,” he added.

On “Ops Selamat”, Khalid said 85 deaths had been recorded since February 12. The operation which will last until February 26, is aimed at reducing accidents and crime during the festive season. 

According to him, focus will be on 60 locations nationwide where frequent fatal accidents occur. It involves Johor, Perak, Kelantan, Selangor and Negri Sembilan.               

He advised the public to ensure vehicles were in good condition before travelling and also urged them to seek their neighbours’ help to keep an eye on their homes in their absence during the festive season. — Bernama
