KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 14 ― More than 200 people are rallying in front of popular shopping mall Sogo here today to protest the jailing of Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on a sodomy charge.

Under the gazes of Pakatan Rakyat’s (PR) young leaders including Anwar’s eldest daughter, Nurul Izzah, the demonstrators are lustily calling for the PKR adviser to be freed.

As weekend shoppers look on, they chant “Bebas bebas, bebas kehakiman [Free the judiciary system]”, “Hidup hidup, hidup rakyat [long live the people]” and the signature PKR cry, “Lawan tetap lawan [we will keep fighting]”.

The exact identity of the organisers are unknown but posters of a rally promoting the hashtag movement #KitaLawan had been spreading on the Internet and social media urging Anwar supporters to meet in front of Sogo at 4pm today and to dress in black.

Nurul Izzah who is Lembah Pantai MP, and several unknown others in PKR party shirts are holding up banners while student activist Fahmi Zainol invites several people to address the crowd.

“We are headed to the dogs if we do not change the country,” PKR state lawmaker Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, who is present, tells the throng of people, many who are sitting down peacefully on the steps in front of the mall.

Also present is DAP’s Syefura Othman, better known as Rara, who takes her turn to speak publicly.

The group later marched towards Dataran Merdeka but were forced to change their plans after finding the entrance to the historic square blocked at the intersection of Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman and Jalan Raya.

Unfazed, they promptly made a left turn onto Jalan Tun Perak before halting in front of the Maybank headquarters.

Former student activist Adam Adli Abd Halim also spoke and exhorted the rally-goers to return for another gathering next Saturday at the same time, and to bring musical instruments and more supporters.

He called for a rally to be held in the city weekly.

The demonstrators finally dispersed at 5.30pm.

A handful of police officers, traffic police and Kuala Lumpur City Hall officers were on standby during the rally but did not make any attempt to break up the demonstration.

The protest was largely peaceful; however, several young men also wearing black shirts and black bandanas covering their faces took the chance to spray paint a passing police bus. They also vandalised a nearby McDonald’s signpost.
