AMPANG, Feb 6 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s call for moderation is insufficient as it has not resulted in the decline of extremist groups in Malaysia, Selangor mentri besar Azmin Ali said today.

Azmin said that Najib’s call for a moderate Malaysia lacked action given the rise of groups here who preach extremism and threaten racial ties among Malaysians.

“For one, the call by the PM (Najib) is not sufficient as it must be translated into actions.

“I have given my commitment on behalf of the state of Selangor that there is no space at all for extremism, fanaticism and racism under the state administration of Selangor,” he told reporters after attending the closing ceremony of the 2th International Youth Gathering here.

Azmin said that Malaysian youths must lead the way in fighting extremism and promoting moderation.

“The world will not change without youths who rise to fight extremism,” the state mentri besar added.

“I hope the federal government will also take serious decisions to ensure that Malaysia will grow and give fair treatment to all, irrespective of their religious backgrounds, race and culture,” he said.

Interfaith relations in Malaysia has taken a hit in recent years, compounded by the unfettered rise of right-wing Muslim groups like Perkasa and the Ikatan Muslimin Malaysia (ISMA).
