SHAH ALAM, Feb 1 — A five-year-old toddler was held captive for 10 days after being kidnapped from his home in Taman Maznah, Klang, and was drugged by his captors to keep him calm.
Selangor CID chief Datuk Mohd Adnan Abdullah said police rescued the child in an apartment in Port Dickson at 12.05am yesterday.
The police team led by South Klang CID chief Supt Nik Ros Azhan Nik Hamid raided a unit at Corus Paradise Resort and arrested five men who were with the toddler.
“Police found the boy in a drugged state and we believe it was to keep him calm,” Adnan said.
The child was admitted to Seremban Hospital and was warded at the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit.
“The child is stable and is with his parents at the moment,” Adnan said.
He said police had yet to identify the type of drug administered to the child as they were still waiting for laboratory reports from the hospital.
Police arrested a sixth suspect at Taman Subang Permai at 2.15am.
“We received a report on Jan 22 at 2.10am from a lady who said her neighbour’s child had been kidnapped by two men,” Adnan said.
“Following that, police conducted early investigations and identified the five-year-old boy, who was asleep with his mother and another sibling when his captors broke into the house and kidnapped him.”
The suspects also took the victim’s mother’s mobile phone.
“Seven days later, the family received a short messaging service sent by the suspects from the boy’s mother’s phone, demanding for A$100,000 (RM282,183), US$100,000 (RM363,350) and RM200,000 to be handed over to the suspect the next day,” Adnan said.
“The family did not pay the ransom and the suspects threatened to harm the child if the ransom was not paid.
“Police believe the suspects knew the victim’s parents.”
He also revealed the victim’s parents ran a business but did not disclose the nature of their trade.
Police also conducted urine tests on all suspects and they all tested negative for drugs.
Several mobile phones were confiscated and all suspects — aged between 16 and 35 years old — were remanded for seven days.
One of the suspects had a previous conviction record for robbery.
Police have classified the case under Section 3(1) of the Kidnapping Act 1961.
The victim’s father declined to comment on the matter.
