KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 1 — A seemingly-confident Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today said there is no possibility he will be convicted in his second sodomy case, ahead of the Federal Court’s decision on February 10.

The opposition leader also did not entertain question on who would replace him in the event he is jailed, insisting “nothing will happen”.

“I remain cautiously optimistic based on the evidence, the law and the facts. No way can I get a conviction.”

“Beyond that is beyond me for now,” Anwar told reporters after launching an international conference on Islam.

When pressed to clarify on the contingency succession plans, Anwar started singing the line “Whatever will be, will be” from the 1956 song “Que Sera, Sera”.

Despite that, Anwar said he hoped Pakatan Rakyat (PR) allies PAS and DAP are able sit down to settle their differences privately, although the federal opposition pact has yet to decide when.

“I’m appealing to them to refrain and come back to the meeting table. I hope we can set a date before the 10th. I’m in communication, but unfortunately we’re not able to agree on the date yet,” Anwar said.

Earlier this week, PAS secretary-general Mustafa Ali called his DAP counterpart, Lim Guan Eng, a liar for claiming that the Islamist party had agreed to the latter’s bid to restore local council elections, and challenged him to a public debate on the issue and hudud.

The disagreement over the third vote is the latest flashpoint to threaten the relationship between PAS and DAP, whose leaders have already been trading barbs over the Islamist party’s plan to enforce hudud Islamic penal law in Kelantan.

Anwar will finally learn his fate on February 10 when the Federal Court delivers its highly-anticipated decision in the opposition leader’s second sodomy charge.
