MALACCA, Jan 30 — Malacca’s crime index declined more than 12 per cent last year, with 3,676 cases reported compared with 4,187 cases in 2013, said Malacca police chief Datuk Chua Ghee Lye.

He said it was due to the hard work of all parties as well as good cooperation from the community towards making Malacca a secure and safe state.

He said motorcycle thefts and break-ins were crimes that showed the sharpest decline last year, while crimes involving firearms showed an increase.

“We will continue to seek ways to combat crime in this state,” he said at a news conference after a briefing on ‘Go To Safety Points’ (GTSP) and ‘Safecam Partnership’ here, today.

The GTSP programme aims to provide early assistance to road users who become victims of crime to get security services at business premises in collaboration with the police under this programme.

Chua said the owners of 163 retail outlets statewide had signed a memorandum of understanding with the Royal Malaysia Police under the GTSP programme and among them 154 premises including Bank Simpanan Nasional and 24-hour convenience stores 7-Eleven have registered under the ‘Partnership Safecam’ programme. — Bernama
