KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 22 ― The number of flood victims in Sarawak dropped to 5,631 this morning from 6,344 last night while in Kelantan and Perak the number remained unchanged at 255 and 77, respectively, from last night.
A spokesman of the Sarawak National Security Council (NSC) said the evacuees were being housed at 38 relief centres, the latest one having been opened this morning in the Long Panai area in Miri to accommodate 31 victims.
He said the Kuching division had 3,122 victims; Samarahan, 1,184; Limbang, 1,226 and Mukah, 68.
In Kelantan, a state NSC spokesman said the flood victims were being housed in school halls, factories and mosques as their houses had been washed away or damaged due to the massive floods last month.
In Perak, there were 43 victims in Perak Tengah and 34 in Hilir Perak.
In Sabah, the evacuation centre in the Tenom district was closed this morning.
The number of flood victims in Membakut stood at 790; Beaufort, 706 and Sipitang, 60.
The number of victims in several other districts had yet to be ascertained. ― Bernama
