Flood situation improves in most states

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 22 — The number of flood victims in Sabah continued to increase tonight with 4,118 people evacuated compared with 3,035 this evening.

Sarawak, on the other hand, showed a slight drop to 3,067 from 3,071, while in Kelantan and Perak, the number of flood victims remained at 255 and 77 respectively.

The total number of flood evacuees at relief centres in flood-affected states tonight was 7,517 tonight compared with 6,438 in the evening.

In Sabah, Beaufort District Officer Mohd Shahid Othman said the number of evacuees in four relief centres in the district had increased to 1,310 compared to 1,214 earlier this evening.

Meanwhile, in Membakut, Assistant District Officer, Sarudin Ismail said the number of evacuees in six centres had risen to 2,677 from 1,694.

The number of victims in Sipitang remained the same with 131 from 35 families, said a flood operations room spokesman.

In Sarawak, a National Security Council (MKN) spokesman said the number of relief centres had been reduced by one, bringing the total to 16.

The Samarahan relief centre recorded the highest number of evacuees with (1,277 victims) followed by Limbang (1,205), Kuching (379), Miri (123) and Mukah (83).

In Kelantan, the number of evacuees remained at 255 involving 62 families in eight relief centres in Kuala Krai, while in Perak the number remained unchanged with 77 evacuees at two relief centres. — Bernama
