KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 14 — Johor Baru traffic police collected more than RM2.4 million in outstanding fines from more than 13,000 Singaporean motorists during a six-day operation last month, according to a report by the Straits Times (ST)
In the operation from December 27 to January 1, traffic police caught 13,529 drivers with outstanding fines near and at Johor Baru immigration checkpoints.
"We will do this regularly. I would say to all drivers: We are not targeting Singaporeans.
“We will (conduct these operations) against all errant motorists, including Malaysians," Johor Traffic Police Chief Baharudin Mat Taib was quoted in the report as saying.
Baharudin told ST that more than 15,470 fines were paid during this period, with almost S$500,000 (RM1.34 million) paid in cash, while the rest of the fines were settled by credit card.
Singapore vehicles account for 313,661 — or 37.4 per cent — of the unsettled traffic summonses issued to non-Malaysians from 2000 to 2013, according to the report.
The police official stressed that summonses would only be issued once proof has been established that an offence has been committed.
"My advice to Singaporeans is to check whether they have summonses at the traffic police station and to please pay," he said.
