Discounted produce on sale in flood-hit areas

Its minister, Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, said the special sale would be held to ease the burden of flood victims.

"Fish will be sold at controlled price, while vegetables will be sold at special prices with 50 per cent discount at farmers' markets which open after the flood. "Cabbage, which is RM2.19 per kg (before the flood), will be sold at RM1.10 per kg, while red chili is RM7 per kg, from RM13 per kg before the flood," he told a media conference at Wisma Tani today.

Ismail Sabri said there were still adequate fish stock, despite the floods in several states floods and that the ministry would begin importing fish to be frozen to ensure there would be enough supply after the flood.

The National Fishermen Association will also buy fish from the private sector so that the supply can last for one to three months, he added.

On vegetable supply, he said about 200 tonnes would be sent to states affected by the flood every week. In a related development, Ismail Sabri said the ministry and all its agencies would channel aid, totalling RM1.82 million, to the eight states affected by the floods, involving 42 districts.

“The aid includes rice, dry food, baby napkin, mosquito coils and daily essential goods," he added.

Ismail Sabri advised flood victims with loans from Agrobank and Tabung Ekonomi Kumpulan Usaha Niaga (Tekun Nasional) to approach the bank and Tekun office to reschedule their loan repayment.

He said there were about 8,800 Agrobank borrowers, involving loans of RM337.18 million, while Tekun borrowers totalled 21,462 people, with loans totalling RM136.9 million. — Bernama
