KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 30 — The federal government's RM500 million special allocation for victims of the chronic floods hitting the peninsula is woefully inadequate given that over 220,000 people have been affected, a DAP lawmaker said today.
DAP national organising secretary Anthony Loke said the amount would equate to just over RM2,000 per victim, and urged Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak to call for an emergency parliamentary sitting next month to approximate on the extent of the damage.
"That (amount) hardly covers any personal loss... what about damage to their houses and other property?" he said at a press conference here today.
"If a special parliamentary sitting is held, the members of parliament from the affected the states will be able to give their insight on what is needed for them (the flood victims) to get back on their feet... and from the federal government can make an estimation," suggested Loke.
Najib, who visited Kelantan on Saturday, said that the RM500 million fund, to be managed by the National Security Council (NSC), was to help residents whose houses and vehicles were damaged by floods across eight states nationwide.
The sum would not be used to cover the cost to repair damage to educational institutions, government buildings, mosques and other infrastructure in the similar category, the prime minister added.
According to Loke, settlements in Kuala Krai, Gua Musang and Manek Urai appear as though they have been hit by a tsunami as the towns located on relatively higher grounds have not been floods in more than 20 years.
"The prime minister should visit these places on land, instead of flying in helicopter; then he will understand how badly the people are affected," said Loke, who is also the Seremban MP.
The DAP, which began its donation drive for flood victims on Sunday, has collected a total of RM220,324 to date, but the cash money will dispersed for relief efforts once the floods subside, said Loke.
"But we have also collected and sent supplies in two container trucks on Sunday," he said.
The party is also in the midst of organising a second aid mission involving some 40 four-wheel-drive vehicles to deliver aid to Kuala Krai tomorrow and Thursday.
As at 8am today, a total of 235,218 people have been evacuated from their homes in Terengganu, Kelantan, Pahang, Perak, Johor, Perlis, Selangor and Kedah.
Although floodwaters are gradually receding in Kuala Krai and Kota Baru, weather forecasters have warned that the worst is not yet over in Kelantan, Pahang and Terengganu.
