KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 22 — Toy retailer Hamleys Malaysia has apologised for its employee who allegedly told a job applicant to remove her headscarf during an interview, adding that the company policy does not forbid its female staff from wearing a tudung (headscarf).
The local outlet of the world’s oldest toy store from London, located at a shopping centre in Petaling Jaya, also said on its Facebook page yesterday that it has taken disciplinary action against the employee over the controversy.
“Management and all the employees at our store would like to sincerely apologise over this issue,” said Hamleys Malaysia.
“We are extremely regretful over this incident and its impact. We hope that Datuk Rosyam and his daughter, as well as the Muslims who have been offended by this incident, are willing to accept our apology,” the toy store added, referring to local actor Rosyam Nor.
Rosyam tweeted last Thursday that his daughter, who had just finished her Form Five SPM examinations, was looking for work at Hamleys, but was told to remove her headscarf.
“Kurang aja” Rosyam had tweeted from his @IamRosyam Twitter account, using the Malay term for rude.
Rosyam retweeted yesterday a tweet showing an image of Hamleys’ apology.
