The two Malaysia Airlines (MAS) disasters were included in the list of most discussed Moments on the social network across the globe this year, according to a list compiled for Twitter’s #yearinreview2014. Flight MH370, which disappeared on March 8 while en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing with 227 people on board, dominated conversations on Twitter during the month that was earlier marked with the glamour of the Oscars. A scant few months after MH370, another MAS flight, MH17, left an indelible mark on Malaysians and across Twitter in July, after it was shot down over eastern Ukraine and killing all 283 people who were aboard. The double disasters were previously also listed as among the most discussed topics on the Facebook social network, coming in at 7th in a list that was topped by the FIFA World Cup in Brazil. Other topics that dominated discourse on Twitter in 2014 included the Sochi Winter Olympics (#Sochi2104) and the Academy Awards (#Oscars) in March, the World Cup (#WorldCup) in July, and the ongoing Hong Kong pro-democracy protests (#UmbrellaRevolution). Issues that made the Moments list but generated fewer conversations were the death of US comedian Robin Williams (#RIPRobinWilliams), the Scottish referendum on independence from the UK (#IndyRef), and US midterm elections (#IVoted). MH370 remains missing over nine months after it vanished without a trace, while investigations are still ongoing over who and what shot down MH17 in July.
