KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 14 — A federal DAP lawmaker demanded today that 1 Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) walk the talk on transparency by offering itself up for a full audit to the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) and Auditor-General.
DAP MP Tony Pua noted that in its immediate response to the police report lodged by Umno’s Khairuddin Abu Hassan, the sovereign wealth fund had declared its willingness to be investigated to rebut all claims of improprietary in its operations.
“Therefore if 1MDB is really sincere in being transparent and believe that there is absolutely nothing to hide, then they must immediately offer itself to an audit and investigation by the PAC and the Auditor-General,” Pua said in a statement here.
He noted that this would not be the first time that 1MDB is summoned to face the PAC, having been called forward twice in 2011 to testify.
But during the two meetings, Pua, who is a member of the PAC, claimed that the firm “refused” to disclose information to the parliamentary select panel.
1MDB was never again summoned to face the PAC, he said, despite repeated requests by some panel members.
“Hence the BN government led by Datuk Seri Najib Razak must stop hemming and hawing, and instead take the bull by the horns to offer themselves for scrutiny by the PAC and the Auditor-General,” Pua repeated.
On Friday, The Star Online, citing unnamed reports, said Khairuddin lodged the report against 1MDB and its subsidiaries, alleging “questionable” business, investment and fund raising transactions and decisions.
The news portal reported that Khairuddin is backed by “powerful forces” in the party and that he decided to lodge the report following various reports in both the local and foreign as well as online media agencies which had allegedly proved the flaws in 1MDB’s management of taxpayers money.
Khairuddin was also reported to have demanded a “detailed and comprehensive” investigation, including the “interrogation of 1MDB’s directors and representatives of any companies implicated”.
Khairuddin was also reported to have vented his dissatisfaction with 1MDB’s alleged failure to counter allegations of imprudence, often made by Pakatan Rakyat (PR) lawmakers.
“As of March 2014, 1MDB is burdened with debts to the tune of RM41.9 billion, bearing the risk of bankruptcy and the loss of public funds. This will burden the Malaysian Government as 1MDB’s guarantor,” Khairuddin was quoted saying.
Yesterday, Umno secretary-general Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor urged the Batu Kawan Umno division deputy chief to retract the police report, calling the politician’s actions “unbecoming, unfair and childish”.
“This is the problem among Umno members who do not understand the party’s struggle. We cannot (blindly) listen to things circulating on the internet, websites and social media.
“Don’t fall into these ridiculous perceptions made by the Opposition. I don’t understand why he (Khairuddin) had to make that police report,” he was quoted saying by Astro Awani.
