KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 25 — Saying it welcomed the recent anti-corruption blitz, PKR Youth today said federal graftbusters should be going after bigger fish and asked if an investigation had started on former Finance Minister Tun Daim Zainuddin’s questionable wealth.
The opposition party’s wing chief Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin claimed no action had been taken despite a police report by deposed deputy prime minister-turned-Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on June 30, 1999 against Daim.
“Unfortunately, until now, we are still waiting for a response from MACC whether investigations have started on the report.
“MACC has not made any media statement that Tun Daim Zainuddin has been called in for investigations up till now,” Shamsul Iskandar told reporters at the Parliament lobby here, calling the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission by its acronym.
According to the Bukit Katil MP, Anwar had, in his police complaint 15 years ago, accused Daim of amassing “billions of ringgit in African and Eastern Europe banks using proxies to cover up the wrongdoing”.
“I urge MACC to immediately begin investigations into Tun Daim’s wealth.
“I also officially ask that The Special Committee on Corruption (JKMR) chaired by Tan Sri Abu Zahar Ujang also play a part so that the big fish are not let off while the small fry are caught in the net,” Shamsul Iskandar said.
In March, the Malaccan lawmaker had asked MACC to look into the allegations by Anwar against Daim, who helmed the Finance Ministry from July 1984 to March 1991.
Today, Shamsul Iskandar said he lauded MACC’s recent move to arrest 23 ‘class F’ contractors who were appointed under the Fishermen’s Housing Special Project in the Dungun constituency in Terengganu.
Two months ago, MACC brought 289 individuals to court, among them, 119 were civil servants, he added.
