KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 15 — A 19-year-old was killed after being hit on the head with a fork lock for refusing to hand over his mobile phone to a group of Mat Rempit.

Khairul Idzham was not the initial target of the 20 Mat Rempit roaming the streets of Gombak on Thursday night.

City CID chief ACP Khairi Ahrasa said the teen suspects had first wanted to rob two African men who were walking near SRJK(C) Lee Rubber in Jalan Gombak.

“The Africans ran off towards a shop. The suspects then turned towards Khairul and his five friends who were hanging out near Taman Tasik Seri Gombak at 11.30pm.”

The suspects, armed with machetes, fork locks and motorcycle chains, demanded Khairul and his friends surrender their mobile phones. All except Khairul gave in to their demands.

“One of the suspects then hit him with the fork lock and pushed him into the lake.”

A scuffle ensued between the victim's friends and the gang members who fled after they realised Khairul had drowned.

Khairul's body was recovered by police and Fire and Rescue Department personnel at 1.30am.

Khairi said police had arrested seven teenagers aged between 15 and 18 so far.

“We are still looking for another seven suspects. We know who they are and we expect to arrest all of them soon,” he said.
