KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 12 — Another two attempts to smuggle illegal substances worth RM800,000 via courier services have been foiled by police.
Bukit Aman Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department chief Datuk Seri Noor Rashid Ibrahim said police seized 8kg of methamphetamine at a courier service centre headquarters in Petaling Jaya.
He said the police ran checks at the centre on two different occasions after receiving a tip-off.
“The first check was carried out last Friday, where police found 2.5kg of methamphetamine stashed in paper rollers. Another parcel contained 1.9kg of the same drug was found hidden in a bicycle seat,” Noor Rashid said.
The packages were wrapped in carbon paper to avoid detection. Police believe they were sent via an international courier service from Guandong, China, possibly by a Nigerian drug syndicate.
On Monday, after receiving another tip-off, police found another parcel containing seven rolls of adhesive tape with 2.5kg of methamphetamine hidden in them.
A further 1.9kg was found packed in small bags inside six printer cartridges.
Noor Rashid said police were trying to establish the identities of those involved in the smuggling attempts.
He said they were working with the international courier company and its counterparts in China to foil any other attempts to bring in drugs.
On Oct 30, Malay Mail reported a couple used the Poslaju courier service to send ketum leaves to a processing lab in Kota Damansara.
The package was from an unknown sender in Kedah and was supposed to be processed. The attempt failed when the substance was discovered by police.
Poslaju came under fire in May when a journalist ordered a flare and smoke bomb online and had them couriered from Johor Baru via its courier service.
This incident and the subsequent police investigation led the company to conduct its own internal inquiry.
