PETALING JAYA, Oct 12 — The hunt for gambling overlord Ah Hai, who was the target in the Bukit Bintang grenade attack, widened with the disclosure that he had allegedly pointed a gun at a police officer.

The incident occurred in August when the 53-year-old was asked to provide his personal documents during a routine check in Sentul.

A police source said before police could further question him, Ah Hai alighted from his car and angled his gun towards the police.

He was subsequently arrested and released on police bail.

The source said Ah Hai was a “bold gangster” who has the respect of the Chinese secret societies.

City police chief DCP Datuk Tajuddin Md Isa confirmed that Ah Hai was investigated for criminal intimidation for pointing a pistol to the police.

Tajuddin said police have completed investigations and submitted the papers to the Attorney General’s Chambers for further action.

Malay Mail also learned that Ah Hai often resorted to name dropping of top police officers every time he gets into trouble.

Police are still looking for Ah Hai and they believe he is still in Malaysia.

“We don’t think he has fled the country. I think he is laying low and we are exhausting all our sources to find him as he will be able to shed light into investigations,” said Tajuddin.

Ah Hai was reported present at the club during the 4am incident to negotiate a bookie recruitment drive and it is believed that his rivals knew about the meeting.

Ah Hai was targeted because he was “pinching” bookies from the top syndicates.

CCTV at the car park revealed it was the job of two men. Police are yet to establish their identities as the recordings were unclear.

In 2006, Ah Hai was high on the wanted list for suspected involvement in one of the largest illegal bookmaking rackets in Malaysia.

He was also previously arrested under the Dangerous Drugs (Special Preventive Measures) Act 1985 for drug trafficking and possession.

No arrest has been made and police have recorded 20 over statements from victims and traders around the club over the incident.
