KLUANG, Sept 6 — The government will not compromise on the nation’s fundamentals such as race, religion and the Malay rulers, said Defence Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein.  “The fundamentals will remain although the government may decide to repeal or amend the Sedition Act.

“We will not compromise on “pillars” in nation building, namely race, religion and the Malay rulers,” he told reporters after attending the Semberong Umno division delegates meeting here, today.  It was opened by Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Idris Haron. Hishammuddin is Semberong Umno division chief.

The Umno vice-president said the “pillars” need to upheld because it guarantees stability and survival of the nation and the religion.  “The Sedition Act has been turned into a polemic by those who did not know what is being done by the government.

“We (the government) must explain the issue. Discussion on the Sedition Act can’t be done with emotion or mixed with racial and religious sentiments.” He said Malaysia has sufficient laws to deal with issues but is lacking in term of enforcement. — Bernama
