KOTA KINABALU, Sept 1 ― The restructuring of the Eastern Sabah Security Command has created a new post of public director to coordinate efforts between various security authorities under the body.

Sabah's Deputy Federal secretary Ruji Ubi was elected to the new post, effective today.

The restructuring of Esscom, which came into effect from July 15 this year, gave the police jurisdiction over intelligence, security and defence, and abolished the post of Esscom director-general, which was previously held by a senior Immigration Department officer.

The new restructure also involved the setting up of two major components — security and defence management as well as enforcement and public action.

Esscom was created on April 1, 2013 after a terrorist intrusion in Tanduo, Lahad Datu.

ESSZONE covers 10 districts comprising 1,733.7 kilometres from Kudat to Tawau involving the districts of Kudat, Kota Marudu, Pitas, Beluran, Sandakan, Kinabatangan, Lahad Datu, Kunak, Semporna.
