GEORGE TOWN, Aug 28 — A security guard shot dead a man who attempted to rob a bank in Jalan Sungai Dua here, today.

Penang deputy police chief Datuk A. Thaiveegan believed the man (in his 30s) is from the same gang who escaped with RM60,000 from the same bank on May 29.

He said the man entered the bank alone at 11.17 am and poured petrol on the front counter before shouting he wanted to rob the bank.

“However, before the man could do anything, the security guard stationed behind the counter fired two shots at the man’s’s body.

“A parang was found tied to the man’s waist. He was also wearing a fake moustache,” he told reporters at the scene.

Thaiveegan said the police also found a Proton Saga believed used by the man parked by the roadside near the bank.

“The police have not ruled out the possibility that the man had friends who were waiting outside and are studying footage of CCTV recording.”

He praised the 29-year-old security guard for his quick action which did not compromise the safety of six to seven customers in the bank. — Bernama
