As the viral ALS Ice Bucket Challenge takes the internet by storm, more and more celebrities and regular folk are putting themselves through the challenge of throwing a bucket of ice cold water over their heads — all in an effort to raise awareness on Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.

According to The Star, ALS is defined by the ALS Association as a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord.

The progressive degeneration of motor neurons, which reach from the brain to the spinal cord, and from the spinal cord to the muscles, eventually leads to their death.

With muscle action affected, patients could become totally paralysed as a result of the disease.
