KUALA LUMPUR, July 23 — The haze-induced low visibility of less than five kilometres over the waters of the northern part of the Malacca Strait is expected to persist until tomorrow, according to the Meteorological Department.
This condition is dangerous for ships without navigational equipment, it said in a statement.
The department also warned of strong winds and rough seas brought on by Typhoon Matmo that has been detected about 1,960km north-east of Kudat in Sabah at 5am today.
The typhoon is at 24.2 degrees North Latitude and 120.3 degrees East
Longitude and moving north-west at 25km per hour, it said.
The department also said that south-westerly winds with a speed of 40 to 50km per hour and waves as high as 3.5m in the waters off Perlis, Kedah and Kudat (Sabah) as well as Palawan, Reef North, Condore and Layang-Layang are expected to continue until tomorrow.
These conditions are dangerous for small boats as well as sea sports and recreation, it added. — Bernama
