KUALA LUMPUR, July 20 — The police are investigating the case of a Korean woman who was seen attired in a dress with Quranic verses printed on it at a supermarket in Ampang, a photograph of which went viral on Facebook yesterday.
Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said action would be taken in accordance with the law.
“The police are aware of what happened. God willing, we will take action according to the law. Trust us.
“The police will not be biased. All offences will be investigated regardless of race. We have to respect our legal system,” he said in a post on Twitter.
He said the woman, who arrived in Malaysia recently, was believed to have bought the dress during a visit to India.
Meanwhile, Ampang Jaya Police chief ACP Khairuldin Saad, who confirmed the case, said a police report was lodged soon after the woman’s photograph appeared on Facebook.
“We lodged the report ourselves because no civilian came forward to do so and an investigation is in progress,” he told Bernama.
He said the case was being investigated under Section 298A (1) of the Penal Code, which provides for a maximum jail term of five years upon conviction.
The picture, which went viral on social media yesterday, also showed a man, believed to be an Arab, seemingly scolding the woman. — Bernama
