KUALA LUMPUR, July 16 — A video of a woman menacing an elderly man with a steering lock for scraping her bumper in a minor accident has spread online, with social media users excoriating her for the abusive reaction to the fender bender.

The 2.33-minute video uploaded to YouTube yesterday begins with the Malay woman in a headscarf seizing the key of the man’s Proton Wira that hit her Peugeot 208, and shouting triumphantly, “See? I got your keys!”

In the clip said to be recorded in Kuantan, she then returns to the Proton and begins hammering away at its fender, bonnet and windscreen using what appears to be a steering lock in the shape of a baseball bat.

“Ini kereta baru-lah, bodoh (This is a new car, stupid)”, she shouts at the white-haired Chinese man whose car bumped into hers.

The man explains that it was an accident and unintentional, and assures the woman that he will pay for the damage to her car.

The angle of the video prevents a visual assessment of the damage to the Peugeot but the Proton appeared to sustain only minor cosmetic damage.

But rather than soothing the woman, the man’s assurances only set her off further.

“You pay me, you pay me now, 2,000,” she shouts while continuing to hit the man’s car.

The exchange continues before the woman, unable to extract payment, adopts a racial tone in her abuse.

“You think you are Chinese, you are better than us! You are very stupid!” she shouts, before accusing him of crashing into her car on purpose.

The woman later shifts her Peugeot forward to examine the damage, before getting in her car and explaining to passers-by that her response was because “Dia Cina (He is Chinese)”.

It is unclear what the outcome was, as the video ends shortly after.

Twitter users have since reacted with abhorrence to the woman’s behaviour, calling her aggressive and racist response disgraceful, disgusting, shameful and stupid, among others.
