Drug dealer jumps into river to escape police

KUANTAN, June 27 — A man believed to be a drug dealer jumped into Sungai Kuantan in a bid to escape the police yesterday.

However, the 32-year-old suspect was caught in Ops Tapis Terancang.

Pahang Deputy Police Chief Datuk Jamaluddin Abd Majid said the suspect was sleeping in a boat at the Fisheries Development Authority (LKIM) Jetty during the incident.

“Realising the presence of the police, the suspect jumped into the river but was arrested minutes later,” he told reporters here today.

The operation involving more than 100 personnel was carried out around the jetty and Tanjung Lumpur from 4.30am until 7pm.

A total of 125 people, including a woman believed to be involved in drugs were detained, and police have confiscated 957.3 grammes of heroin worth RM95,730, 22.8 grammes of syabu (RM6,840) and 160 methamphetamine pills(RM4,800) with an overall value of RM107,370.

Jamaluddin said a car, motorcycle and RM5,100 were also seized.

He added that most of the detained were fishermen. — Bernama
