SUBANG JAYA, June 8 — Ninety-two days have passed without a trace of flight MH370, but the families of the crew aboard the ill-fated jetliner are keeping the candle burning for their loved ones, and have vowed not to be passive in their fight for the truth behind the aircraft’s mysterious disappearance.

At a charity dinner held for the plane’s 10 missing crew members, a grief-stricken Jacquita Gonzalez said every single clue must be examined and re-examined until more conclusive answers finally turn up.

Until then, said the wife of in-flight supervisor Patrick Francis Gomez, passivity is not an option.

“If this tragedy prompts reflections and debates, as it should, let’s make sure it’s worthy of those we have lost on board MH370,” Gonzales said in her speech at the charity dinner, which was organised by the National Union of Flight Attendants (Nufam) for the families of flight MH370’s cabin crew.

“But we ask only one question ‘Why did it have to be MH370, a flight our spouses are on’?” she added, crying throughout her speech.

Despite a massive multi-nation hunt, no physical evidence of the commercial plane has been recovered since it disappeared on March 8, whether wreckage or human remains.

Australian authorities had also called off the first phase of the search on May 29 after finding nothing, and said the hunt would enter a new stage covering a 60,000 sq km area along flight MH370’s probable flight arc over the southern Indian Ocean.

Gonzales said that for the past three months, the families have been overcome with sadness, anger, frustration, confusion and exhaustion.

“But there will come a day when thoughts of our husbands or wives will bring a smile to our lips before it brings a tear to our eyes,” she said.

At the charity dinner, Lee Khim Fatt, husband of flight attendant Fong Wai Yueng, recited an emotional poem titled “My Beloved” that was penned by Dr Timothy Sng.

“Where have you gone? Where are you now? Lost and untraceable. Agonising silence, as I call your mobile daily,” Lee read, breaking down several times.

Syafinaz, sister of flight attendant Mohd Hazrin Mohamed Hasnan, recited a poem written by his wife Intan Maizura Othman.

“Muhammad will be my pillar to move on,” read the poem, in reference to Hazrin’s and Intan’s baby boy who was born last month.

Nufam president Ismail Nasaruddin said the charity dinner has raised RM50,000 for the families of the 10 flight attendants.

The National Welfare Foundation also donated RM10,000, with chairman Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil saying at the dinner, “As Wanita Barisan Nasional chief, I feel the loss of everyone aboard MH370 and I pray that their families will remain strong to move on with their lives”.

Empire Hotel Subang, which hosted the charity dinner, donated RM20,000.

The ten crew members aboard flight MH370, excluding the pilot and co-pilot, were Gomez, Foong, Hazrin, chief steward Andrew Nari, chief stewardess Goh Sock Lay, leading steward Wan Swaid Wan Ismail, leading stewardess Tan Ser Kuin, and flight attendants Ng Yar Chien, Tan Size Hiang, and Junaidi Mohd Kassim.

Gonzalez said the cabin crew had served MAS between 15 and 34 years.
